Rent receipt for taxes

Some renters are asked for proof of the rent they paid over a year. A single yearly statement is easier to hand over than twelve slips.

One statement for the year

The yearly summary lists the rent due and the amount received for each month, then adds the entered amounts. Leave months with no payment blank. The landlord signs it. The tenant keeps it with the rest of their records.

It is part of the Landlord Pack ($4.99, one time), along with twelve numbered monthly receipts in one PDF. Open the yearly summary

A note on taxes

Whether rent paid counts for any credit or deduction depends on the country, state or province and on your situation, and this site cannot tell you. Ask your tax office or a tax professional what proof they need; the summary only records what was paid.

Questions

Does a rent receipt count for tax purposes?

Where a rent credit or deduction exists, the tax office decides what proof it wants. A receipt or yearly statement showing who paid, to whom, for which address and how much is the usual starting point. Ask your tax office. This site gives no tax advice.

Can I get a summary in Canada?

The summary can be set to Canadian dollars. Ask your provincial tax office what it needs for any rent-based credit.

Can the tenant make their own?

The landlord should sign. A tenant can use the summary as a checklist and ask the landlord to sign.

Is the rent receipt maker free?

Yes. Single receipts are free and unlimited, one per page, with a small “Made free at Rent Receipt Maker” line at the bottom. The Landlord Pack ($4.99, one time) adds a full year of receipts in one PDF, a yearly summary, two or three receipts per page, your logo and no free line.
